Central/top of South America beach town recommendations
Before I start an identical thread on a more suitable website, I thought I might see what WHOnde Nast has to offer.

Looking to spend up to ten days on a beach with a town attached (for food/drinks etc). Clear water and white sand would be great, but I'll take just a nice beach.

Flying into and out of the region on BA (has to be as I'll be using a 2-4-1 in First) and taking in a couple of other capitals then settling down for a rest for ten days or so, before heading home - so packages aren't an option. Not looking for the purest local experience, happy with it being a bit touristy - even somewhere like Cancun would fit the bill - but Mexico is Plan C as I've already been.

There are numerous options if you're willing to spend hours on a bus rattling towards a national park, but I'll be with the missus so that's not really an option.

I've wiped my knob on Judith Chalmers to no avail, and I'm really struggling to find somewhere suitable.

Suggestions?

All booked!

BA First Class to Mexico City (a £5544 ticket for £500 - collect your Avios, people), then onto Panama City, then to Roatan (Honduras) for eleven days on the beach, then onto Nicaragua to visit Granada or Leon, before going back to Mexico City to come home, 20 days in total.

The best news is that I found dates that didn't block any of the last game at UP, Eurovision, the Euros and the first game at the OS.

Thanks for the helps and ideas, chaps.

Gone from Cancun down to Tulum, Cozemal and on to Belize city then Caye Caulker. All quietish apart from Cancun, but Caulker worth going to. Utila quite similar with both having a backpack ish vibe. Utila is cheapest place to learn to dive supposedly. Id go back to both as amazing water and cheapish. Both small too so easy to get about.

Someone mentioned Port of Spain, dunno if there is still a curfew but its a bit sketchy in Trinidad. Having said that, its got great food and its not full of fat americans or resorts which is good. Its expensive though from memory.

Panama/Columbia might be a good shout too.

Something I have done which not many people have, is traverse both the Suez and Panama canals in both directions, paradoxically to get from the Atlantic to the Pacific in the Panama canal. you actually travel east

Ball ,If you dont mind a bit of roadtime you could split your 10 days between Bocas & Manuel Antonio .
It would mean a 3 hour shuttle to & from San Jose & then pick up your connection to Bocas ( flights every other day ) .
I think 5 days is about right down here , with a different beach on each of those days .
Havent been to M.A. Myself but have only heard good things .
You 'd see Pacific & Caribbean beaches that way & National Parks in both places as well .

Re: Central/top of South America beach town recommendations
I think you 'd have to fly into San Jose for a B.A. Connection , Panama City definitely not .
3 flights a week straight into Bocas about $ 200 one way but you could get a better advanced rate .
Plenty of beautiful beaches round here , some people say some of the best in Central America .

What slow route?

You can get a 45 minute flight from panama city. Or if you really want to go for it, you charter a boat from Cartagena. Supposed to be fantastic. Ask Panama Hat.

You don't go to Tulum to stay, you can do that from Cancun

You been there recently? Massive eco tourism development. Better than Playa del carmen nowadays. Cozumel is great for diving but very quiet nightlife when the cruise ships leave.

Re: Central/top of South America beach town recommendations
Gavros - indeed, and I've looked at some of those. The only way I've seen to get to Bocas del Toro is the slow route I mentioned. Utila, IIRC, loads of the flights I was looking at went via the US which is a complication I can do without. Cartagena's beaches get slated online, although we may take it in as one of our stops en route to the sitting.

Caye Caulker rings a bell, I'll work out tonight why I'm not all over that.
